D0 you consider AMRS to be a competitor? They have a similar foundry approach and have produced useful molecules at scale - for example, squalane (sharks liver oil) used in cosmetics, and a sugar substitute that I have actually tried - dissolves in cold brew coffee rapidly, which is a nice feature for me.

Yes, as of recently. I’m taking a deep look at AMRS. Seems quite similar to DNA, but less hyped. Going to be sending out my thoughts on it in the next 24-48H.

Look forward to it. AMRS & DNA share a background. AMRS was founded 15-20 years ago by biotech folks teaching at Berkeley. Initially, they focused on making fuels from algae pooping out molecules. It worked, but fracking dropped oil prices, so they shifted to other molecules. Squalane was chosen as a market opportunity in skin care, their Biossance grew from that.

Meanwhile AMRS still owns 18% of a JV with Chevron to make fuels & lubricants, Novvi.

DNA also comes out of Berkeley, I'm pretty sure folks at both companies know each other.

Interesting company, I wish AMRS would focus on one thing. But hey, they are still alive and generating revenue. AMRS thinks their ability to scale up production is going to keep them in the lead. Meanwhile, DNA's business model looks more interesting to me than a consumer goods company.
